Virginia Class A / B Business Law Exam Prep Course
Virginia DPOR requires contractor applicants to pass two types of exams to obtain a license: a business law exam and a technical exam. There is an 8-hour Pre-License requirement for all new Virginia Contractors: classes A, B, and C. The same person who takes the Pre-License course must be the same person who takes the Class A/B license exam.
The Virginia Class A/B Business Law exam has three sections: Virginia, General, and Advanced. Class B contractor applicants are required to take and pass the Virginia and General sections. The 'Advanced' portion is optional for Class B applicants. Class A contractor applicants are required to take and pass all three sections.
Exam Prep Course:
This course will prepare you for the three-part Class A or two-part Class B Business Law exam at PSI. We will cover the information within both reference manuals allowed inside the exam: the NASCLA Contractor's Guide to Business, Law, and Project Management - Virginia 8th edition, and the Code of Virginia USBC Part 1 Summary.
The online pre-recorded content included with any (live or pre-recorded) course purchase includes highlighting instructions and practice exam questions for each book.

This classification of license is required for all building construction projects exceeding $120,000 in labor and materials and for contractors having yearly revenue over $750,000. The Company must have a $45,000 net worth or supply proof of a $45,000 surety bond.
Class B Contractor (intermediate license)

The exam at PSI is open-book. You may bring the approved references into the exam, and reference manuals may be tabbed and highlighted. Tabs must be permanent adhesive tabs - removable tabs such as post-its are not allowed in the examination center.
You may take the following references into the exam with you:
- NASCLA Contractors Guide to Business, Law and Project Management, Virginia 8th edition
- Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), 2015 edition
All Virginia Contractor Applicants are still required to meet other state licensing regulations in order to obtain a license. This includes taking a mandatory 8-Hour Pre-License Course before applying for licensure as well as submitting a license application. All applicants must also take a technical exam specific to the type of work they perform. We offer exam prep courses and materials for nearly every exam in Virginia - check them out here!
