    South Carolina Licensing Requirements 

    In South Carolina, journeyman and master electrician licenses are regulated by the Municipal Association of South Carolina, while electrical contractor licenses are issued through the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation (LLR), specifically through the Board of Contractors. It is essential to understand the licensing process and classifications to know what is required for each stage of your career. 

    Licenses Through MASC 

    • Residential Journeyman Electrician: requires 4,000 hours of residential experience and passing the residential exam.
    • General Journeyman Electrician: requires 4,000 hours of residential and commercial experience and passing the general exam.
    • Master Electrician: requires 8,000 hours of journey-level experience, passing the master exam, and eligibility to supervise other electricians. 

    Steps to apply to the above: 

    • Submit experience affidavits and educational transcripts.
    • Pay application fees ($110–$220 depending on license class).
    • Exams are open book, based on the 2023 NEC, and require a 70% score to pass. 

    License Through LLR 

    Electrical Contractor: To become a licensed Electrical Contractor in South Carolina, you must have two years of experience holding a MASC license or two years of experience working as a supervisor for an electrical contractor. 

    • This license allows you to operate your own electrical contracting business, bid on electrical contracts, and supervise electrical work.
    • Requirements include proof of business insurance (liability and workers' compensation) and a financial responsibility check, which involves providing your business financial information.
    • You must submit an application to the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation (LLR), along with the application fee and proof of meeting all other requirements.
    • You must also pass the electrical contractor exam and commercial business law exam. The contractor exam focuses on the National Electrical Code (NEC), business and law knowledge, and regulations specific to the electrical industry.  

    Continuing Education & License Renewal 

    Electrician licenses in South Carolina must be renewed every two years by June 30th of even-numbered years. Here’s what you need to know: 

    • Journeyman and Master licenses require continuing education (CE).
      • Residential & General Journeyman: Must complete 8 hours of Board-approved CE during each renewal period.
      • Master Electrician: Must complete 16 hours of CE, including 4 hours on business and law.
    • Renew online through the MASC website and submit your CE certificates before the renewal deadline to avoid late penalties.
    • Electrical contractors licensed through the LLR are not required to complete continuing education.
