How to Prepare for the National Standard General Building Contractor A (ICC F11) Exam

The National Standard General Building Contractor A Exam is a test of your knowledge of new construction and retrofit of commercial and multi-family units, covering such topics as: 

  • General Regulations 
  • Building Planning and Life Safety 
  • Structural Systems 
  • Building Envelope 

It is a four-hour, open book exam consisting of 90 questions. 

To pass the exam, you score 70% or higher. Effective preparation involves a thorough review of the study materials provided and relevant national building codes and standards. How to Get Your National Standard General Building Contractor A (ICC F11) Certification

To schedule your ICC Standard General Building Contractor Exam, you'll need to: 

  • Register with ICC by visiting my.iccsafe.org/register 
  • Submit your application and the $115.00 registration fee. 
  • Register with Pearson Vue and schedule your exam
  • Pass the four-hour, open-book test consisting of 90 questions. A 70% score is required to pass.
