Step One: Create Your Business 

The first step in the process of obtaining your contractor's license is to create your company. If you already have a business, skip to the third step. For those of you who are looking to get started, continue reading.  

You'll need a company to obtain your license since South Dakota does not provide licensing to individuals. You can go through a variety of options to declare your business, including limited liability companies (LLC), corporations, and partnerships, among others. Step Two: Name Your Business 

A great company name will do half of your advertising work for you. You may choose to name your business after yourself or decide to show off the type of work you intend to perform. Either way, you'll need to get the name registered. 

You'll have to go through the appropriate South Dakota departments to register your company, which will vary depending on the contracting work you'll pursue.

Step Three: Decide What Type Of License Your Business Needs

Electrical Contractor's License

To apply for your electrician licensure, you can contact the Department of Labor and the Regulations Electrical Commission in South Dakota. 1) Plumbing Contractor's License 
As a plumbing contractor company in South Dakota, you must obtain a license. To obtain the application, get into contact with the South Dakota State Plumbing Commission through their phone number (605) 773-3429. 2) Asbestos Abatement Certification 
If you are focusing your business on asbestos abatement, you'll follow a slightly distinct procedure from prospective plumbing and electrical contractors. You're going to work towards obtaining a certificate rather than a license.

3) General Contractor's License 
As of the current date, South Dakota does not provide state licenses or certifications for companies only engaging in general contracting work. In some cases, you'll have to obtain licensing and/or certificates from those offices to work as a contractor.
