Things to Know About Obtaining Your Virginia Electrical Contractor License

Obtaining an electrical contractor’s license isn’t easy, but Contractor Training Center can help you navigate the path to starting your career as a licensed electrician. Here’s what you need to know: 

You must be at least 18 years old and disclose if you’ve been found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony criminal offense. Decisions regarding a criminal background are made on a case-by-case basis. 

 Here is what’s required to become a licensed electrician in Virginia:

  • Pre-requisite Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation requires all contractor license candidates to complete the DPOR 8-Hour pre-license course for Contractors.  
  • Education Complete vocational training from approved provider before applying to take journeyman electrician exam (additional classroom hours are not required for the master electrician license). 
  • Work Experience Apprenticeships are available through technical schools or union or non-union electrical apprenticeship programs but are not required. Documented work experience under a licensed master electrician also fulfills the requirement.

  • Apply You’ll need to apply for your license with the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). Once your application is approved, you can schedule an exam with the testing center. 
  • Pass the Exam: 
  • The Virginia Journeyman Electrician Exam is an open-book, multiple-choice assessment of knowledge and competency in electrical installations based on national and Virginia-specific codes and regulations. A score of 70% (49 questions answered correctly out of 70) is required to pass. 
  • The Virginia Master Electrician Exam is a comprehensive assessment of experienced electricians seeking to advance their careers and work independently. A score of 70% (63 questions answered correctly out of 90) to pass.  
  • To be eligible to take the Master Electrician exam, you must have held a valid Virginia Journeyman Electrician license for at least one year or have a minimum of ten years of practical experience in the electrical trade, verified by individuals who have observed your work.

Which Virginia Contractor License is right for you?

NASCLA Accredited License The NASCLA Accredited license is recognized for commercial construction in multiple states, including Virginia. The NASCLA Electrical Examination Program helps you avoid taking multiple state exams if you wish to get licensed in multiple jurisdictions. In addition, once you take an NASCLA Electrical Exam, you can apply to other accepting states for the corresponding license without taking their state licensing exam.

Journeyman Electrician You’re licensed to install, modify, and maintain electrical controls, systems, and apparatus, typically under the supervision of a master electrician. A journeyman electrician cannot independently contract with clients or run their own electrical business without a master electrician's license.

Master Electrician Possesses more experience, has passed a more comprehensive exam, and may perform all the duties of a journeyman electrician but is licensed to plan and lay out electrical projects, supervise journeyman electricians and apprentices, and work independently. They can also own and operate their own electrical contracting business.

A journeyman electrician must work for at least one year under a master electrician before they are eligible to apply for a master electrician license in Virginia (unless they have 10 years of overall experience).
