In West Virginia, Electrical Contractors are regulated by the West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board. Per the WCVLB, “Electrical contractor” means a person, firm, or corporation who engages in the business of electrical work and employs master electricians, journeyman electricians, or other related workers for the construction, alteration, or repair of any electrical wiring, equipment, or systems as defined in the scope of the national electric code.

“Electrical work” means the installation of wires, conduits, apparatus, fixtures, other appliances, equipment, or systems for transmitting, carrying, controlling, or using electricity as defined in the scope of the national electric code.

Approximately 10-14% of questions for this test come from the American Electricians' Handbook and 86-90% of questions for this test come from the NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, 2017.

A score of 70% (53 questions) is required to pass the exam.

License Requirements

Steps to obtaining your license

All West Virginia Contractor License applicants are also required to take and pass the West Virginia Business and Law exam as well as submit a license application for approval. In addition, Electrical Contractors must also hold a Master Electrician license before applying for an Electrical Contractor license.
