At Contractor Training Center, we have the Prep Class, and the books, and the tabs needed for you to pass the many contractor examinations. The exams are OPEN BOOK and Tabbing and Highlighting the books is allowed and part of our curriculum. The books referenced are from the International Code Council (ICC) and we have all of the ICC Books needed for the ICC Prep class. The following cities require you to pass the ICC exam to obtain a contractor's license: Cheyenne, Cody, Douglas, Gillette, Jackson, and Lander.

 

It isn’t necessary to study and memorize all the material contained in the reference books, that would likely take you many months of study. HOW TO GET A CONTRACTOR’S LICENSE IN WYOMING 

General contractors do not need to hold a state license to work in Wyoming. Licensing is done at the local level so check with your city or county before you begin work. Many of the local jurisdictions have similar requirements and testing. Here are a few of the main jurisdictions.

The Gillette jurisdiction accept the National standard examinations on information provided by the International Code Council (ICC). There are 3 different levels of Contractor licenses for General Contractors where you will have to take an exam.

• Class A contractors can do work on all structures up to and including high rise buildings. W11 National Standard General Building Contractor (A) 90 multiple-choice questions Exam fee: $110 (CBT) Open book—4-hour time limit 
• Class B contractors can do work on all structures up to and including four stories in height. W12 National Standard Building Contractor (B) 80 multiple-choice questions Exam fee: $110 (CBT) Open book—4-hour time limit
• Class C contractors are home and duplex builders.W13 National Standard Residential Building Contractor (C) 80 multiple-choice questions Exam fee: $110 (CBT) Open book—4-hour time limit

Class D and E licensing is more oriented to subcontractors and in some cases, a test may not be required.

• Class D contractors are residential remodeling contractors.
• Class E contractors are roofing, siding, window and deck installers.

HOW TO GET A CONTRACTOR’S LICENSE IN CHEYENNE

Cheyenne will allow you to take ICC contractor exams based on the National Contractor/Trades Examination Information Bulletin  https://www.iccsafe.org/wp-content/uploads/CO-National.pd or the Wyoming Contractor /Trades Examination Information Bulletin https://www.iccsafe.org/wp-content/uploads/CO_WY-AssocMunicipalities.pdf

Class A – General Contractor: You will need to apply for a Class A license in Cheyenne for any construction, alteration, or repair work on any type or sized structure. A Class A license may perform any work classified under Classes B, C, and D except for trade work.

Class B – Building Contractor: A Class B license application will be needed for the construction, alteration, or repair of one, two, three, and four-family residential construction and one-story commercial buildings up to 2,500 square feet. A Class B license can perform any work classified under Class C, D, and R except for trade work.   

Class R – Residential Contractor: You will need an application for a Class R contractor if you are planning to do any construction, alteration, additions, or repairs of detached single-family dwellings no more than three stories high and accessory structures. A Class R contractor may perform all work classified under a Class D license except performing trade work.

In all cases, you may hire a subcontractor to perform any and all trade work. Additionally, your application may look a little different across classes, however, your application process will be very similar for all licenses.

What Do You Need To Become a General Contractor in Cheyenne?

Although the licenses you may be applying for are different, your application process will be virtually the same. What may differ, however, is required exams and associated fees, which is described further below. Your application process to become a licensed general contractor in Cheyenne, Wyoming will go as follows:

• Fill out the application.
• Provide a certificate of general liability insurance with the City of Cheyenne Building Department as the certificate holder.
• If you have employees, you must register with the Division of Workers’ Compensation through the Department of Workforce Services of the State of Wyoming.
• Companies are required to register and disclose business structure with the Wyoming Secretary of State.
• Pass the ICC National Standard General, or Residential (Class R), exam OR the Wyoming Building Contractor exam (WAM).
• Provide proof of experience.
• Provide personal and professional references.
• Attend the Licensing Board meeting on the second Tuesday of each month.
• Sign and notarize application.
• Include all application and licensing fees.

Every application provides a Qualified Supervisor License, in which you must appoint a qualified supervisor for your company. Every business is required to have one qualified supervisor.
