Virginia Contractor License Classifications

Virginia offers three classifications of contractor licenses: Classes A, B, and C. A  license is required for any project that exceeds $1,000 in labor and material costs.

If you intend to work on single projects exceeding $10,000 or have annual revenue exceeding $120,000, you will need to upgrade to a Class B or Class A license. See below for more about the difference between a Class B and Class A Virginia Contractor License.

Class A Contractor (Unlimited License)

This classification of license is required for all building construction projects exceeding $120,000 in labor and materials and for contractors having yearly revenue over $750,000. The Company must have a $45,000 net worth or supply proof of a $45,000 surety bond.

Class B Contractor (Intermediate License)

This classification of license is required for all building construction projects exceeding $10,000 in labor and materials and for contractors having yearly revenue over $120,000. The Company must have a $15,000 net worth or supply proof of a $15,000 surety bond.

Additional Courses

All Virginia Contractor Applicants are required to meet other state licensing regulations in order to obtain a license. This includes taking a mandatory 8-Hour Pre-License Course before applying for licensure, as well as submitting a license application. All applicants must also take a technical exam specific to the type of work they perform. We offer exam prep courses and materials for nearly every exam in Virginia - check them out here!
