Which Massachusetts Electrician License Is Right for You?

In Massachusetts, electrical licensing follows a progression system where individuals advance from apprentice to Journeyman Electrician, and then to Master Electrician if they choose to operate independently or run a contracting business.

Journeyman Electrician is licensed to perform electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work under the supervision of a Master Electrician.

To qualify for the Journeyman license in Massachusetts, applicants must:

  • Complete a state-approved electrical apprenticeship program
  • (typically 8,000 hours of on-the-job training + 600 hours of classroom instruction)
  • Pass the Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician Exam, which tests knowledge of the Massachusetts Electrical Code (527 CMR 12.00) and the National Electrical Code (NEC)

Journeyman license holders may perform electrical work but cannot pull permits or operate an electrical contracting business on their own.

Master Electrician is licensed to operate an electrical contracting business, pull permits, and supervise Journeyman and Apprentice Electricians.

 To qualify, applicants must:

  • Hold a Journeyman Electrician license
  • Gain additional work experience as required by the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians
  • Pass the Massachusetts Master Electrician Exam, which tests expanded code knowledge, business practices, and electrical system design

Master Electricians may contract directly with customers and take legal responsibility for electrical work on job sites.
