Description

The NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC) 2023 edition brings major updates to help electricians, engineers, inspectors, and contractors keep up with today’s rapidly changing electrical world.

For your convenience, this book has been tabbed and highlighted to match our exam prep curriculum and may be used as a reference in electrical contractor licensing exams.

With hundreds of changes, this edition helps ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance with modern technologies and practices. Key updates include:

General Electrical Systems
The 2023 NEC introduces new rules for using reconditioned equipment, requires flat and stable surfaces in front of electrical equipment, and clarifies how to maintain safe access when equipment doors are open.

Residential Installations
GFCI protection has been expanded to include appliances like dryers and microwaves. Installers now have the option to include outlets on kitchen islands and peninsulas. Emergency disconnects are required for one- and two-family homes, and 10-amp branch circuits are now allowed in specific situations. A new annex also provides safety guidance for using medical equipment in residential settings.

Commercial & Industrial Systems
GFCI protection now applies to more types of appliances, and AFCI protection is required in sleeping areas of public safety buildings. The code includes updated rules for replacing panelboards and introduces safer disconnecting methods for LED lighting systems.

Alternative Energy & Energy Management
The code offers improved guidance for connecting solar, wind, and battery systems to the grid, and it clarifies the difference between backup and emergency power systems. It also introduces new commissioning requirements for energy storage systems (ESS), updates load calculations for EV charging stations, and includes rules for floating solar and wind systems, including those in offshore locations.

New Topics
For the first time, the NEC covers Class 4 fault-managed power systems, electrical safety in cannabis production facilities, bonding requirements for splash pads and similar wet areas, insulated bus pipe and flexible bus systems, and germicidal lighting used for disinfection.
