All candidates must pass the Business & Law Exam for licensure in Georgia as a Residential or General Contractor. Applicants must apply to the state prior to registering with PSI for an examination. Georgia State law requires contractors to be licensed and regulated by the Professional Licensing Board. Eligibility for examination is determined by the Board.

Exam Preparation

How to prepare for the Georgia Contractors Business and Law Exam

To become a licensed Residential or General Contractor in Georgia, candidates are required to pass the state business and law exam in addition to meeting other licensing requirements.

The Georgia Contractors Business and Law Exam is a two-hour, open-book test consisting of 50 questions. The exam covers topics including: 

  • State Licensing Requirements 
  • Estimating and Bidding 
  • Business Organization and Financial Management 
  • Tax, Labor, and Lien Laws 
  • Project and Contract Management 
  • Risk Management 
  • Environmental and Safety Regulations

To pass the exam, you must achieve a score of 70% or higher. Effective preparation involves a thorough review of all study materials and reference books. License Requirements

How to get your Georgia Contractor License

To obtain a Georgia Residential Basic Contractor license you must:

  • Have two years of experience working as or employed by a residential contractor. 
  • Acquire general liability insurance (minimum $300,000 per occurrence) and submit the signed certificate of insurance with your application. 
  • Pass the Georgia Contractors Business Law Exam. 
  • Pass the Georgia Residential Basic Contractor Exam.


A Georgia Residential Light Commercial Contractor license is required for contracting in Georgia for any job over $2,500.  To obtain a Georgia Residential Basic Contractor license you must:

  • Demonstrate financial responsibility by providing a(n):  
  • 24-month bank credit reference form; or  
  • 25,000 surety bond; or  
  • $25,000 line of credit or letter of credit; or  
  • Affirmation of a minimum net worth of $25,000.    
  • Provide copy of an insurance certificate showing proof of workers compensation insurance as required by Georgia law and liability insurance in a minimum amount of $500,000 (individual or as qualifying agent for a business).  
  • List two projects successfully performed and completed within the residential-light commercial category within the four years prior to application submission.  
  • Pass the Georgia Contractors Business Law Exam.  
  • Pass the Georgia Residential Light Commercial Contractor Exam
