Things to Know About Obtaining Your Georgia Construction Contractor License

Here’s what you’ll need to become a licensed contractor in Georgia:

Be 21 years of age or older
Demonstrate good character and provide proof of financial responsibility
Have a four-year degree in construction management or related field; or
Have four years of practical experience and a combination of college courses; or
Have a minimum of four years of practical experience in which two of those years should have been working under a general contractor/administration.
Pass the Georgia Contractors Business Law Exam and the Georgia Technical exam for the category of work in which you’ll be applying.

DETERMINE WHICH TYPE OF LICENSE YOU NEED

Any project over $2,500 requires a licensed contractor in the state of Georgia. There are three types of licenses a contractor can hold:

Residential Basic Contractor
Residential Light Commercial Contractor License
General Contractor License

Which Georgia Construction Contractor License is right for you?

The NASCLA Accredited exam is recognized for commercial contracting in multiple states, including Georgia. The NASCLA Examination Program helps you avoid taking multiple state exams if you wish to get licensed in multiple jurisdictions. In addition, once you take an NASCLA Exam, you can apply to other accepting states for the corresponding license without taking their state licensing exam.

Georgia Residential Building Contractor License: A Georgia Residential Basic Contractor is a contractor who can work on construction, remodeling, and improvement of one- to four-family unit residences, not exceeding three stories in height.

Georgia Residential Light Commercial Building Contractor License: A Georgia Residential Light Commercial Contractor can perform any contractor work or activity performed by a residential basic contractor and, additionally, includes activity related to multifamily and multi-use light commercial buildings and structures, and their related accessory buildings and structures
