Virginia Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) License Exam Prep Services & Materials

Virginia Home Improvement (HIC) Contractors may perform repairs or improvements to dwellings and townhouses as defined in the USBC or structures annexed to those dwellings or townhouses as defined in the USBC. The RBC classification also provides for this function. The HIC specialty does not provide for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or gas fitting functions. It does not include new construction functions beyond the existing building structure other than decks, patios, driveways, and utility outbuildings that do not require a permit per the USBC.

License Requirements

Other Requirements For Virginia HIC License Applicants

All Virginia Contractor Applicants are still required to meet other state licensing regulations in order to obtain a license. All applicants must complete the Mandatory 8-Hour Pre-License Course and submit a license application to DPOR. Class A and Class B Applicants must also take and pass a business law exam before submitting a license application to DPOR.

Can I build homes with a Virginia HIC License?

No, you cannot build new residential structures as a Virginia Home Improvement Contractor. Only licensed Residential Building (RBC) Contractors can build new homes from the ground up. Virginia HIC Contractors can only perform improvements and additions to existing structures.
