Maryland Home Improvement Contractor Exam Prep

  • You must be pre-approved to take the MD Home Improvement Exam by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission.
  • If you are performing work on renovations on pre-1978 housing, you may also need to have a lead abatement certificate as well.  You can contact the EPA at or the MD Maryland Department of the Environment at
  • If you are doing new construction, you will need to register with the Consumer Protection Division of the Office of Attorney General
  • All contractors must display their contractor’s license number on all vehicles, cards and advertisements
  • You must notify the Commission if you change your directors, name of the business, address or if the business is sold.  You must notify them by certified mail no later than 10 days after the change.

If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor that involved home construction or improvement or if you have been convicted of a felony, you must inform the commission in writing and supply copies of the conviction records.



  • All contractors are required to have a General Liability Insurance Policy in the amount of $50,000
  • You must have two years of experience in renovations, home improvement or building
  • MD Contractors have to prove financial fitness based on the size of the work to be undertaken.  If you submit a surety bond, you must submit it in the amount of $20,000.
  • If you represent a company or corporate entity, you must submit the articles of incorporation
What Work Can You Do With The MD HI License:

You are allowed to repair, replace or alter a building or any part of a building that is used as a residential home.  This also allows for work to be done on condo units as well. You cannot work on multi-family apartments with this license.

This class will prepare you to take the Maryland Home Improvement Contractor Exam.

The MD Contractor Exam Consist of:

150 Minutes to take this exam

  1. Home Improvement Law (41 Items)
  2. Door-to-Door Sales Act (4 Items)
  3. Labor Laws (3 Items)
  4. Safety Regulations (4 Items)
  5. Estimating (3 Items)


  • You Must apply with the State of Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation in order to sit for the exam.
  • It takes approximately EIGHT WEEKS to get approval to take the exam
  • The license fee is $325 and renewal fee is $305
  • License fee and renewal fee for sales contractor is $75
  • You must also submit your credit report, $75 for the Guaranty Fund and proof of liability insurance

- There is no reciprocity with any other states license and the state of Maryland
