Contractor License Options

Which Tennessee Contractor License is right for you?

In Tennessee, a contractor's license is required before bidding or offering a price for projects $25,000 and up (includes materials and labor), as well as for subcontractors performing electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and roofing.  

The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance issues and recognizes several kinds of contractor licenses: 

  • NASCLA Accredited General valid for electrical contracting in multiple states, including Tennessee. The NASCLA Examination Program helps you avoid taking multiple state exams if you wish to get licensed in multiple jurisdictions. In addition, once you take an NASCLA Exam, you can apply to other accepting states for the corresponding license without taking their state licensing exam.

  • BC-A Residential covers the construction, remodeling, repair, or improvement of one, two, three, or four-unit residences not exceeding three stories in height and accessory use structures in connection to such residences.

  • BC-A, B (Sm) Combined Residential/Light Commercial covers erection, alteration, repair or demolition of any public building or structure, the total cost of which does not exceed $1,500,000; and residential construction, remodeling, repair, or improvement of one, two, three, or four-unit residences not exceeding three stories in height and accessory use structures in connection.

  • Tennessee BC-A, B Combined Residential/Commercial authorizes the erection, remodeling, repair, alteration, or demolition of any residential structure regardless of the number of units or number of stories. It also allows the erection, construction, alteration, repair, or demolition of any building or structure for use and occupancy by the public.

  • Tennessee BC-b (sm) Small Commercial Building entitles licensee to bid on and contract for the construction, erection, alteration, repair or demolition of any public building or structure, the total cost of which does not exceed $1,500,000.00.

  • Tennessee BC-B Commercial authorizes licensee to bid on and contract for the construction, erection, alteration, repair, or demolition of any public building or, including residential construction with more than four units or greater than three stories in height.

  • Tennessee BC-B, C Commercial/Industrial holder may bid on and contract for the construction, erection, alteration, repair, or demolition of any public building or structure, including residential construction with more than four units or greater than three stories in height, as well as buildings or structures used for industrial production and service, such as manufacturing plants. 

This classification allows for performing any of the 34 building subcategories for commercial or industrial work. 

  • Tennessee BC-C Industrial authorizes the holder to bid on and contract for the erection, alteration, repair and demolition of buildings or structures used for industrial production and service, such as manufacturing plants.
