The North Carolina Building Contractor Exam is a challenging test of your knowledge of building regulations, best practices, and terminology required by the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors. However, with the right study materials and courses, you’ll build the base knowledge and confidence you’ll need to pass the exam and begin your career as a contractor.

 As a licensed building contractor in North Carolina, you will be able to take on projects for all construction and demolition activity pertaining to the construction of residential units required to conform to residential building codes. Such projects often include:

How to prepare for the North Carolina Building Contractor Exam

The North Carolina Building Contractor Exam is administered by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. Its purpose is to evaluate aspiring building contractors' knowledge of building codes and other relevant regulations, effective construction practices, as well as business principles necessary for operating a contracting business.

The North Carolina Building Contractor Exam covers a wide array of subjects related to commercial building, including:

  • Procurement and Contracting requirements

Applicants must receive approval from the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors before they can schedule an exam.

If you’re newer to the construction field or don’t have vast experience in each specialty, a supplemental book set is available.
