In Tennessee, an electrical contractor's license is required before bidding or offering a price for projects $25,000 and up (includes materials and labor), as well as for subcontractors performing mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and roofing.

The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance issues and recognizes several kinds of contractor licenses:

• NASCLA Accredited General valid for electrical contracting in multiple states, including Tennessee. The NASCLA Examination Program helps you avoid taking multiple state exams if you wish to get licensed in multiple jurisdictions. In addition, once you take an NASCLA Exam, you can apply to other accepting states for the corresponding license without taking their state licensing exam. 
• Tennessee Electrical Contractor (CE) licensed for electrical work in the state of Tennessee, including where the total cost of labor and materials exceeds $25,000. The CE electrical classification is accepted statewide, and additional exams are not required in each county or municipality.
•  Tennessee Limited Licensed Electrician (LLE) holder is not a contractor but is authorized to perform electrical work on projects valued over $2,500 but under $25,000 in materials and labor costs.

Adding an LLE license classification to your existing residential contractor's license allows you to increase the earning potential of your business by keeping more work in-house on projects in need of minor electrical work.
