How to Prepare for the National Standard Residential Electrician (ICC G18) Exam

The National Standard Residential Electrician Exam is a test of your knowledge of electrical codes, devices, systems, and methods, covering topics such as:  

  • General Knowledge 
  • Services and Equipment 
  • Feeders 
  • Branch Circuits and Conductors 
  • Wiring Methods and Materials 
  • Equipment and Devices 
  • Special Occupancies, Equipment, and Conditions 

It is a three-hour, open book exam consisting of 60 questions. 

To pass the exam, you score 70% or higher. Effective preparation involves a thorough review of the study materials provided and relevant national electrical codes and standards. Exam prep courses available through Contractor Training Center explain exactly what you need to know to pass your exam the first time.

How to Get Your ICC National Standard Residential (ICC G18) Electrician Certification

To schedule your National Standard Residential Electrician Exam, you'll need to: 

  • Register with ICC by visiting my.iccsafe.org/register 
  • Submit your application and the $115.00 registration fee. 
  • Register with Pearson Vue and schedule your exam. 
  • Pass the three-hour, open-book test consisting of 60 questions. A 70% score is required to pass.Â
