What's on the North Carolina Unlimited Electrical Contractor Exam?

The North Carolina Unlimited Electrical Contractor exam is a 100-question, open-book exam administered at PSI. You'll have six hours to complete it and need a grade of 70 or higher to pass. Unlimited is the only North Carolina electrical contractor classification with no project-value limit. It allows you to contract electrical projects of any value β€” removing the $60,000 Limited and $150,000 Intermediate ceilings entirely. The exam follows the same six-hour, open-book format as the other classifications, but covers the widest span of material. That makes knowing the material important β€” and knowing where to find the answer quickly just as critical.

RESOURCES & REQUIREMENTS

For full details on registration, testing policies, and exam locations, refer to theΒ PSI Candidate Information Bulletin.

Candidates bring their own approved references to the exam.

Calculators, scratch paper and pencils will be provided at the test center. Only the references listed above will be allowed in the testing center; no other books or reference materials are permitted.Β Β

Your references may be tabbed and highlighted within NCBEEC rules. Our course teaches you how to organize and navigate your books so you can find the information you need efficiently on exam day.Β

HOW WE HELP YOU PASS

  1. Study material built specifically for North Carolina. Prepare with 18 hours of instruction built around the references and requirements used for the North Carolina exam β€” including the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 72 and North Carolina electrical contractor licensing law. This isn't generic multi-state electrical prep with a North Carolina name added to it.
  2. Learn to navigate your books before the clock starts. An open-book exam only helps if you can find what you need. We show you how to tab and highlight your references within NCBEEC rules and how to navigate them efficiently when the clock is running.
  3. Practice on the real six-hour clock. One hundred questions in 360 minutes gives you about 3.6 minutes per question β€” including the time you spend looking up answers. Unlimited practice exams let you build your pace, identify gaps, and get comfortable navigating your references before exam day.
  4. Study around the work β€” not instead of it. You're already working in the trade. Your prep should fit around it. Short, mobile-friendly modules make it easier to study between jobs or after work, with live instructor Q&A for the questions you can't solve on your own. Sessions are recorded, so missing one doesn't mean missing the help.

  • An Unlimited license allows you to engage in electrical contracting projects of any value. It's the only North Carolina electrical contractor classification without a project-value ceiling.Β

For experienced contractors, that means your license no longer limits the size of the electrical projects you're eligible to contract.Β

  • You need 9,000 hours of documented electrical experience, including at least 8,000 hours of primary experience.Β

Unlimited carries the highest experience requirement of North Carolina's three electrical contractor classifications.Β

  • No. The classifications are separate applications.Β

If your documented experience meets the Unlimited requirements, you can apply directly for the Unlimited classification.Β

  • In addition to the character statements required of all applicants, Unlimited applicants must submit written statements from two people knowledgeable of their electrical experience.Β

Those statements must attest to your ability to supervise and direct all electrical wiring.Β

  • Yes. The exam is open book, but you must bring your own approved references to the testing center.Β

Because Unlimited covers the widest span of material of the three classifications, knowing how to navigate those references efficiently is an important part of preparing for the exam.Β

  • Yes. The testing center does not provide your reference materials.Β

You'll need your own copies of the approved references, including the 2020 NEC and NFPA 72 (2013 Edition), prepared according to NCBEEC rules.Β

Our course teaches you how to tab and highlight your references, and select packages include the books themselves.

  • The exam follows the same format β€” 100 questions, six hours, open book, with a grade of 70 required to pass β€” but Unlimited covers the widest span of material of the three classifications.Β

That makes efficient reference navigation especially important. You need to know the material, know where to find it, and manage your time across the full six-hour exam.

  • You need a grade of 70 or higher to pass the North Carolina Electrical Contractor exam.Β

The exam contains 100 questions and allows six hours for completion.

  • The biggest differences are the amount of experience required and the value of the electrical projects you're allowed to contract.Β

Limited: Up to $60,000 per projectΒ
Intermediate: Up to $150,000 per projectΒ
    Unlimited: No project-value limitΒ

You do not have to earn the classifications in order. Apply for the classification your documented experience qualifies you to pursue.

  • North Carolina requires candidates who fail the exam to wait 90 days before retaking it.Β

That's why our prep emphasizes both knowing the material and practicing how to find answers efficiently within the six-hour exam window.Β Β

  • Yes. North Carolina electrical contractor licenses require eight approved hours of continuing education annually.
